He has long, tangled black hair and a bushy beard that almost completely hides his face. He possesses phenomenal strength. In the original version, Hagrid has quite a peculiar accent, full of elisions and deformations. Hagrid is by nature very sensitive and sentimental, and he cries easily. Hagrid usually wears a long coat made of beaver or bear fur, or a large mole-skin overcoat full of pockets. For "special occasions," he often wears a brown suit with a hideous yellow tie.

Hagrid has a preference for the most dangerous magical creatures possible, including a dragon he hatched at home and named Norbert, a three-headed dog guarding the Philosopher's Stone named Fluffy, an Acromantula he named Aragog, the hippogriff Buck, and some Blast-Ended Skrewts. He is able to see Thestrals. In fact, he has little interest in docile magical creatures, although he does own a somewhat cowardly hound named Fang as a pet.

Hagrid lives in a small, custom-built wooden house, consisting of a single room, located on the edge of the Forbidden Forest.
